Sculpture Today, Phaidon Press, 2007
Review By Jeremy Le Grand

Phaidon’s 2007 publication Sculpture Today is a survey of prominent trends in contemporary sculpture. The book introduces the reader to a brief historical precedent set by early modernist masters, including Brancusi, Duchamp, and Picasso, and discusses the affect of their work on current sculptural practice. The book intelligently divides today’s major themes into 18 chapters, beginning with the Figure and traveling through such diverse ideas as Post-Pop Objects, Ephemeral Effects, Colour, Surface and Light, Gravity, Accumulation, and Clothing. Each chapter discusses individual artist’s strategies and their historical antecedents, giving the reader an overview of the wide range of materials, motivations, styles and contexts relevant to contemporary sculpture.
