Writing "Thank You" Letters for Scholarships
It is important to thank the generous donors who help PNCA students through gifts of scholarship monies. It’s more than good manners, though: you are required to write a letter in order to recieve your scholarship! (See the Financial Aid Office for more information).
Many students come to the library looking for books on how to write a “Thank You” letter. Although we have a couple of books, they are often checked out, so we’ve created this page to help you figure out how to write your letter.
What to say
Information you might include:
*Your major
*Your year in school (Freshmen, Sophomore, etc…)
*Your hometown
*The importance of your PNCA education to you
*How the scholarship helps you with your PNCA education
*Future plans
*Exhibits you are in, performances, publications, or other ways your work is being shown
How to say it
Your letter might have the following outline:
*1st paragraph. Express thanks to the donor for the scholarship. (Include the name of the scholarship). Let the donor know how the scholarship impacts your PNCA education.
*2nd Paragraph. Share something about yourself, such as how you came to PNCA, where you came from, why you want to study at PNCA, why you want to study art, what your major is and why you have chosen it (or what you are considering as a major).
*3rd Paragraph. Tell the donor about any exhibits, performances, collaborations, publications, or other art-related activities you are participating in. Do you have plans for the future after PNCA? Do you hope to teach, go to graduate school, work for a design firm? What are your goals.
*4th Paragraph. Sum up the letter with a final thanks, such as “With gratitude,” or “Once again, thank you so much for your generosity,” or “I can’t thank you enough for your support,” or some similar statement.
How the letter should look
Use a “normal” font such as Times New Roman or Arial. Use 12 pt. for font size. Below, we’ve outlined how the letter should look on the page:
Date
Donor Name
Donor Company (if applicable)
Donor Address
City, Street, Zip
Dear Donor Name,
Paragraph 1
Paragraph 2
Paragraph 3
Paragraph 4 (final thanks)
Sincerely,
Your name (hand written signature right above your typed name)
