Life Photo Archive
American Memory from the Library of Congress.
The Library of Congress has digitized parts of its huge collection and provides access to university archival collections of photos, posters, sheet music, maps, and other assorted documents. Images are generally pretty good resolution, with a small amount of descriptive detail.
American Museum of Photography
View photographs from current exhibitions, and a rotating selection of the museum’s permanent collection.
The Digital Image Collection at the Denver Public Library consists of prints and negatives that document the history of Colorado and the American West. Over 120,000 images have been digitized.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum Photography Collection.
Hugh Mangum Photographs, (ca. 1890)-1922. From Duke University comes this collection of Hugh Mangum photographs. Mr. Mangum was an itinerant photographer from a prominent North Carolina family who traveled through North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia taking portraits. Approximately 688 glass negatives survive.
Images from the Smithsonian
Over 6,000 images from the Smithsonian, loaded on to a flickr account. Most are “probably in the public domain…” Of special interest to me were the photographs of uniforms and those of aircraft. Great image resource material.
Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Online Catalog Currently searches 61 different collections, including Ansel Adams’ Photographs of a Japanese-American Internment, National Child Labor Committee Collection photographs by Lewis Hine, and Cartoon Drawings.
Library of Virginia Digitized Photo Collections searches across the collections of the multiple libraries. Database contains images that depict the rich and diverse history of Virginia.
Masters of Photography
Although this is an ugly website, it has decent bios and images for 60 artists, from early days to contemporary.
National Park Service Historic Photos of the Cayuse Tribe highlights some of the photographs of Thomas Leander Moorhouse and links to other historical and contemporary images from the Whitman Mission National Historical Site. Images with an Oregon connection.
UCR/California Museum of Photography
From their website: …The largest, most comprehensive photographic center in the West… The museum’s collection provides a foundation for exhibitions and programs examining broad associations between photographic works, the instruments of photography, and society’s evolving relationship with the photograph.
The Urban Landscape Digital Image Access Project. The Urban Landscape Digital Image Access Project is a database of images from various collections held by the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library at Duke University. The database contains 1000 images.
William Gedney Photographs and Writings. Also from Duke University’s digital collections. William Gedney (1932-1989) photographed throughout the United States, in India, and in Europe—street scenes outside his Brooklyn apartment, the daily chores of unemployed coal miners, hippies in Haight-Ashbury, the sacred rituals of Hindu worshippers. Included here are selections from Gedney’s finished prints, work prints, contact sheets, notes, notebooks, handmade photographic books, book dummies, and correspondence.

Amphibian Research and and Monitoring Initiative contains 233 images of amphibians. Need a picture of the eggs of a spotted salamander?
National Biological Information Infrastructure contains images of nature and the environment contributed by photographers and organizations. Most images are freely available for use.
National Park Service Digital Image Archives contains public domain digital images of national parks, monuments, historic sites, and related areas.
Photos and Image Collections of the United States Geological Survey. Includes such items at the Earth Science Photographic Archive, EarthShots: Satellite Images of Environmental Change, the EROS Image Gallery Collections, and many more. Mix of photographs, satellite imagery. Most images freely available for use.
United States Army Corps of Engineers’ Digital Visual Library A growing collection of visuals covering every major USACE program, project, and activity. The library consists of photographs, illustrations, artwork, clipart, logos/registered trademarks, and maps. Click on name of image to get the full sized image. The images are submitted by all USACE commands and are in the public domain.
United States Fish & Wildlife Service Digital Library contains public domain images of landscapes, plants, and wildlife.
USDA On Line Photography Center if you need more or different images of, say, cattle or racehorses.
