The art of the American snapshot
I love snapshots. I am both fascinated and saddened when I paw through a box of snapshots at a thrift store. The fascination comes from two things: the glimpse into anonymous lives and the accidental beauty that often occurs in amateur photographs (for more on this, see my collection of accidental art harvested from craigslist free postings). The sadness comes from wondering what happened. How did somebody’s family photos end up in a thrift store? It can’t be positive. The art of the American snapshot is from an exhibit at the National Gallery of Art in 2007.
